Flossing Facts
1. Maybe you're too tired at the end of the day to bother with flossing. Yet, it doesn't really matter when you do it. The most important thing is to just do it—once a day. Whether you floss before or after you brush doesn't much matter, either.
2. Here's a tip for easy flossing: Try storing floss in your car, in your bag or in your office drawer—then break it out when you have time. There's no need to floss in front of a mirror, either.
3. Flossing removes plaque from areas between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach. If this plaque is not removed, it can eventually harden into calculus or tartar, leading to gum disease. There's also evidencethat periodontal bacteria can attach to the fatty plaques in blood vessels and set off an inflammatory process, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. Other research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with diabetes, pneumonia and other health problems.
4. You need not use only dental floss to clean between your teeth. There are other options specifically made for the purpose, like pre-threaded flossers, tiny brushes that can reach between your teeth, pointed rubber tips or wooden plaque removers.
5. Flossing should not be painful. It's normal for it to be uncomfortable when you first start, but within a week or two, that discomfort should ease.
6. Be aware of flossing too hard—it could damage the tissue between your teeth. But don't be too gentle either, which might not result in a complete job.
7. Children should start to floss as soon as they have two teeth that touch.
The Washington Times reports that overall patent publication of wearable electronics has been growing at a 40 percent annual rate since 2010. Technology companies are looking to add new features to their existing lines of wearable electronics, adding that some technology companies are working on tooth-embedded sensors to help dentists track patients’ diets and habits. The sensor consists of a tiny circuit that fits inside a tooth cavity and can be rigged into dentures and braces. The circuit is able to recognize the jaw motions of drinking, chewing, coughing, speaking, and smoking as well as what and when you ate and drank. After detection, the electro-tooth can send the data to your doctor’s smartphone via Bluetooth. According to the article, there is also evidence that the more manufacturers can pile on wearable technology, the more consumers approve.
We want to wish you and your family a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. Happy 4th of July from our Family to Yours!
Child Safety
Due to the large attendance at many Independence Day-related activities, it is crucial that Families focus on child safety and meet-up plans.
- Families should consider wearing unique, identifiable colors, hold hands at all times and/or buddy up.
-A unique way of ensuring you are contacted if your child is lost in a crowd is to have your child wear a beaded bracelet that has your phone number or consider getting an ID bracelet or something similar.
-Determine a time and place to meet should the Family separate.
-Make sure that you child knows to find a police officer if they get lost in a crowd.
Water Safety
Because almost everyone heads out to the lake or beach for 4th of July, it is important that you and your Family are kept as safe as possible while playing in the water or out in the water with your jet ski or boat. Here are some water safety tips for Independence Day:
- Make sure the children – and even adults – always have a life jacket on when in the water or on a motorized water vehicle (boat, jet ski, etc.)
- Never let your children swim alone. An adult should always be present and paying attention.
- Always step “Feet First”* into shallow water and never try to dive.
- Alcohol, fireworks and Fourth of July do not mix well. Drink responsibly and make sure to have a designated driver available.
- Review safe boating practices.
- Always have a phone handy should an emergency arise.
- Know your limits when it comes to water.
